Readfield Lake House
Built within a grandfathered footprint on a site where setbacks would allow no possible structures, the proposed camp brings the building into further compliance by pulling back from the lakefront towards the lot. By selecting a point on the steep site that is more shallow, a planar form is able to be built and project out, elevating keys views of Maranacook Lake, increasing western surface area, and pulling the building up from the water edge. These choices dramatically increase the natural light accessible to the residents, better conform to guidelines and regulations of the local jurisdiction, and optimize the space available the new homes footprint.
Cool earthy tones wash throughout the home, further lighting the space and giving a sense of openness, while materials and finish colors tie it to its lakeside destination.
Beneath this 3 bed and 1 bath camp, lies ~850 SF of crawlspace with a 6'-8" head height. The client sought additional storage for canoes, yard equipment, and other larger items, but with the strong local ordnances, building a garage or other storage structure consumed too much of the allowed square footage. This 6'-8" space does not quality as livable area, it has direct access to the lakeside of the property through designed hatch doors, and provides the home with a taller foundation, getting it above the lakeside brush for beautiful views, all while meeting the hillside at its flattest point for a gentle reception at arrival.
